Face to Face

Read Revelation 21:15-27

And I saw no temple therein; for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. Revelation 21:22 (KJV)

Over ten years ago, my mother passed away. After struggling with various illnesses for more than a decade, she passed away due to heart and lung failure early on a Saturday morning. While I would never wish that she were still here as sick as she was, I do miss the mother and grandmother that she could have been had her health not failed her. She has missed the lives of all eight of her grandchildren and so many more things.

When I go home to see my Dad, I occasionally think about taking my oldest children out to her grave, but I usually don’t because I know that she is not there…just her body is. I know that I will have to wait for eternity to see her again, for in eternity, all things will be made complete. Just as we worship a risen Savior here on earth, in eternity we will worship Him face to face.

“If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did the most for this present world are just the ones who thought the most of the next.” C.S. Lewis

Waiting for the Bride

Read Revelation 21:9-14

Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife. Revelation 21:9 (KJV)

On the day of our wedding, my wife and I chose to follow the old tradition of not seeing each other until the actual wedding ceremony. Since our ceremony was at night, I had all day to wait to finally see her in her dress and to marry the girl who had won my heart. During the day we talked by phone a few times, and, while I was dressing in my tuxedo, she sent me a sweet card. Yet, nothing could prepare me for the moment those doors opened and she and her father stood at the back ready to come down the aisle. The long day of anticipation was worth the wait…she was breathtakingly beautiful!!!

Christ loves His church in much the same way. He longs for the day when His church will be redeemed.. For now, He chooses to talk with us through prayer and through the Holy Spirit, but the day is coming when the bride of Christ will be united with Jesus for eternity.

In the Arms of Jesus

Read Revelation 21:1-8

And God will wipe away all tears from their eyes… Revelation 21:4 (KJV)

As the father of six young children, tears flow freely in my house everyday, especially from our preschool-aged children. Younger children wear their emotions on their sleeves and often need to be comforted and consoled. After a fall or a big fight over a toy, we scoop them up in our arms, wipe their tears away, and shower them with hugs and kisses. In a short moment, they are back to running and playing again.

I believe that when we finally stand before Jesus in heaven, He will wipe tears from our eyes. These will be tears of overwhelming joy – joy of finally being in the presence of our Savior. But, I also sense that there possibly will be tears of sorrow as well – sorrow for all of the ways we fell short of who God called us to be, for all of our sin and brokenness. How beautiful it will be to be comforted in the arms of Jesus as He wipes our tears away and invites us into eternity with Him!

God, help us today to rest in the promise of eternity with You.

Our Perfect Example

Read Ephesians 4:17-24

If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, the truth is in Jesus: Ephesians 4:21 (KJV)

Our world is in desperate need of positive role models today and it seems that almost no one wants the job. Too many professional athletes, movie stars, and entertainers live selfish sinful lifestyles which provide fodder material for the numerous tabloids. Our teenagers especially are negatively influenced by these “famous” people. While there certainly are some excellent high-profile Christian leaders (Tim Tebow for example), these are often overshadowed by the sheer magnitude of negative choices made by others.

In stark contrast to this, Jesus’ earthly life provided a perfect example for us, showing how to both live and love. His last three years of life and ministry were lived giving Himself away for others, and His death on the cross was the ultimate selfless act in history. As we study His life as recorded in the Gospels, we can learn from the way He lived, the way He taught people, and the way He died. Through the life of Jesus, we clearly see God’s truth.

God, thank you for the perfect example of Your Son Jesus! May we walk in His footsteps today.

The Traitor is Us

Read Luke 22:14-23

And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. –Luke 22:23 (KJV)

I think we often give Judas too hard of a time. We forget that the disciples didn’t fully understand who Jesus was until after the resurrection and until after they had received the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the days leading up the death of Jesus, there had to have been a tremendous amount of tension, confusion, and uncertainty. Unfortunately, Judas allowed this uncertainty to get the best of him, and he unwittingly played a part in the greatest betrayal in human history.

But, honestly, are we so much different than Judas? How often do we betray Jesus with our words, our actions, and our attitude? How often do we choose worldly gain over heavenly investments? The disciples seemed to be surprised that Jesus thought one of them even capable of such an act, and yet each one of the abandoned Him on the night of His crucifixion.

This is the beautiful thing about Jesus…He knows what we are capable of all along and loves us in spite of ourselves.

Praise be to Jesus for His unfailing love!!!

Do They Know?

Read John 13:31-35

Today’s Verse: By this shall all me know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. John 13:35 (KJV)

I recently attended a military wedding and was impressed with the dress uniforms of the groom and his groomsmen. In both the wedding and reception, there was absolutely no confusion identifying those who currently serve in our nation’s military and those who were simply civilians. The pressed uniforms, the polished shoes and swords, and the pride with which they carried themselves all signified their commitment and love for our country.

As followers of Jesus, there is no set uniform to identify our allegiance to our Savior. Even though we can wear Christian t-shirts and place Christian bumper stickers on our cars, Jesus said that our world would recognize us through the way that we love one another more than anything else. What does the world see in you and me? Does everyone around us recognize that we are followers of Jesus or would they be surprised if we told them that we are believers in Christ? Let us love one another in such a way that everyone knows our commitment to Jesus.

Today, may everyone know that we belong to Jesus because of our love for one another.

Moving Forward

Read Isaiah 43:15-21

“Remember ye not ye the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold I will do a new thing…” Isaiah 43:18-19 (KJV)

As I grow older, I become much more aware of my past. My troubled childhood, my embarrassments and foolish mistakes, my accomplishments and my most treasured memories are all a significant part of who I am today. If I so choose, I can allow this past to define who I am as a person and a believer in Christ for the good or for the bad. I can live in the glory of my finest moments or I can live in the shadow of my gravest mistake.

While our past is certainly important, God wants us to trust Him to lead us into the future. In this passage, God encourages His people to move on from their past and to dream of the new things He has planned for them in His will. Our God is a God of second chances, and His greatest desire is to see us become everything He has created us to be…no matter what our past may be.

No matter what has happened, it has all worked to bring you to this very moment…and this is the moment you can choose to make everything new. Start today!

More Than Enough

Read John 6:1-11

Another of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish. But how far will they go among so many? John 6:8-9 (NIV)

In this world, it is easy to believe that you have little to offer. Our culture shines the spotlight brightly on those who are beautiful or talented or both. The average person is often relegated to sitting on the sideline dreaming about what might be if only given the chance. Trying out for the baseball team, applying for the big promotion, accepting that position of leadership-all of these and more can seem very daunting if you look at them with worldly eyes. Our world would have us believe we will only be able to succeed when we are more qualified, more physically attractive, more intellectually astute, or more confident. The message is clear-you are not good enough; in order to succeed, you must be “more”.

However, when you think more deeply about Jesus feeding the five thousand, it becomes obvious that God doesn’t think or work in the economy of “more”. He works with what we have and, with God, what we have is enough. The boy had only five loaves and two fish, but Jesus fed the entire crowd and the disciples gathered the leftovers. The disciples could only see the lack; Jesus could see the potential. Today, may you find peace in embracing the person God fully created you to be!

Dear God, help me to love the person you created me to be. Help me to accept both my strengths and my weaknesses as gifts from you. Help me to see that with you, my little is more than enough.

God and My Rocking Chair

Read Romans 15:7-13

Today’s Verse: Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Romans 15:13 (KJV)

Last night, my two year old son had a hard time going to bed. He kept waking up crying and wanting me to rock him and sing to him. Even though I was tired, I couldn’t resist him because it is obvious that he feels safe and secure in my arms. He has a very strong belief that life is better in that rocking chair. It doesn’t take him long to start singing along (usually Twinkle, Twinkle to every song) and giggling and laughing. He is at peace.

In the same way, our Heavenly Father wraps us up in His arms when we come to Him in faith. He blesses our belief with an overwhelming sense of joy and peace in being secure in Him. The Holy Spirit fills us up with a hope of abundant life found in living for Jesus. May we today celebrate the hope we have found in Him!

God, help me feel Your loving arms wrapped around me today as I place my trust in You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Enter In

Read Revelation 21:22-27

Today’s Verse: “And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.” Revelation 21:25 (KJV)

I recently visited a friend’s church which met in an old grocery store building from a chain that was popular back in the 1960’s. He led me back into parts of the building which were still under renovation to show me two of the original bathroom doors. Faded onto these doors were two words: “whites” and “colored”. I stood in silence, seeing for the first time proof of the “closed doors” of racial exclusion that was accepted for so many years.

Later, as I was driving home, I couldn’t help thinking about doors that have been closed in my own life. Doors of opportunity, doors of love and friendship, doors that I hoped would open but didn’t. Maybe you can think of doors that have been closed in your life as well. Today, we can rejoice in the promise that with God all doors are open, the gates have been flung open wide for us. He loves us and will never turn us away when we come to Him in faith.

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” Helen Keller

No Playing Favorites

Read Romans 2:1-11

Today’s Verse: For there is no respect of persons with God. Romans 2:11 (KJV)

A few years back when I was serving as the youth and college pastor of a large church, a high school baseball player in our community became a serious pro prospect. Though baseball kept him on the road most weekends, from time to time he would attend our church with a few of his friends. Each time, I would watch from a distance as parents and teenagers alike would show him great favoritism simply because he could throw a 95 mph fastball.

This comes as little surprise since, as a culture, we are enamored with celebrities. We view them as more important than us. Yet, in God’s culture, He created each one of us uniquely and for a special purpose. God is not impressed with our best qualities because He gave these qualities Himself. He wants us to take what He gave us and fully become the man or woman He created us to be. To Him, each one of us is special!

God is not impressed with your ability, only your availability.

Holding Our Savior

Read Luke 2:25-36

Today’s Verse: “For mine eyes have seen thy salvation...” Luke 2:30 (KJV)

I have often wondered what it must have been like for Simon to hold the baby Jesus in his arms. To look deeply into His newborn eyes, to caress His cheek, to hear His infant cries and know that this was God incarnate would surely be overwhelming! Yet, we find something deeper in Simon, something much more profound. We find peace.
In our world today, peace is in short supply. Our nation is in conflict, the traditional family is in crisis, and the pace of life grows more frenetic by the day. We are in desperate need for God’s peace to transform our land. More importantly, we are in need of God’s peace to transform our hearts.

Today if you find yourself longing for God to bring peace into your chaos, you need look no further than the baby Jesus. That beautiful baby boy is proof that God loves you and is willing to do whatever it takes to restore your relationship with Him.

Now my eyes have seen Your glory, and my hands have touched Your face, and my eyes have heard You crying, a sweet song of love and grace.

The Sound of Your Voice

Read John 10:1-21

If you closed your eyes, could you recognize the voice of your best friend, your mom or dad, your brother, or sister? Can you hear the voices of your parents when you are about to make a poor decision that they would not approve of? Do you know who is on the phone before they even tell you?

This happens as we get to know a person very closely. We begin to notice and love all of the small details about them. Most of us can recognize the voice of those we love the most without even trying. We spend so much time with them, the sound of their voices are a part of who we are.

In John 10, Jesus compares believers to sheep who know the Shepherd’s voice.

“He calls out His own sheep by name and leads them out...and His sheep follow Him because they know His voice.” (John 10:3-4)

As we spend time with God each day reading the Bible and praying to Him, we should learn to hear His voice and recognize when He is gently speaking to our hearts. As we grow in our faith, we will learn to hear His voice and follow where He leads.

What are some ways that you can learn to recognize God’s voice speaking into your life?

What is one thing God has asked you to do this week?

Prayer Emphasis: Ask God to help you hear His voice leading you each day.

Called Out to Serve

After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise Him for the splendor of His holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for His love endures forever.’ (2 Chronicles 20:21)

SINCE I WAS a young child, I have loved to sing. We had a large console stereo in our front room and our family would listen to records all day long. Everyday, I sang and danced to Elvis, the Kingston Trio, Chuck Berry, and many more artists from that time. As I grew older into my teenage years, my musical tastes changed, and I moved my singing to my bedroom with my own stereo and electric guitar.

It was during this time that I first started attending church with a friend from school. It was a small church and the youth ministry consisted of about 25 teenagers. The youth pastor asked me if I would be willing to bring my guitar and lead a few choruses. I can still vividly remember that first Sunday night being so nervous playing and singing “Seek Ye First” and “Pass It On”.

Now nearly 25 years later, the songs have changed but I am still leading worship for teenagers and adults on a weekly basis. Along the way, I haven’t lost the sense of privilege it is to be counted among those whom God has called out to lead His people in praise. May our hearts never lose the joy of giving thanks to the Lord and declaring His enduring eternal love for His people!

Let Your life sing a song of praise to Jesus today.

The Pain of Regret

Read Isaiah 48:14-22

Today’s Verse: O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! Then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea...Isaiah 48:18

I once read the story of a cruel war general who would allow his prisoners to choose from two methods for their own execution…firing squad or whatever lay beyond a large black door. Afraid of what horrible torture may lie behind the door, most prisoners chose the firing squad. Once a visiting national leader asked this general what actually was in the room behind the door. “Freedom” exclaimed the general. “The door leads outside the compound to complete freedom, but most men are too afraid to choose the unknown.”

Life is filled with choices every day, especially choices about the way live of our lives for God. Too many times, I choose to live for myself and my own desires instead of God’s commands for my life. As a result, my life just blends in with the culture around me, and I miss the blessings that come from living to honor God. God promises peace and righteousness in abundance for those who commit to living according to His word.

God, give me the desire to chose to live according to Your commands this week. Bless my life with peace and righteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

He Said It With His Love

Read Philippians 2:5-11

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2:5)

Everyone seems to have an opinion about everything these days. All day long, the radio and television buzzes with talk shows hosts dissecting the latest issue or scandal. Internet news and sports sites update information by the minute. Countless blogs defend more viewpoints that stir up more discussion. Lines are drawn, sides are taken, and the talking begins. And the best part is that we all think our way of thinking is right. Thus, the war of words rages on and on.

Compare this with the attitude of Jesus and you find a radically different picture. Jesus, who of all men had the most to say, knew that actions speak much louder than words. As the religious leaders debated all around Him, He spoke His message with love rather than words. In obedience to His Father’s will, Jesus gave His life for us so that we can experience the blessing of the abundant life He promised.

In a world of so many words, we can embrace the humble attitude of Jesus. When He had every right to defend Himself, He was silent. He let His love do the talking for Him. Like Jesus, we can choose to love others and lay down our right to our own ways. Sacrificially, we can give our lives to see others experience the life-giving love of Jesus.

Today, let your love speak louder than your words.

A Light in the Darkness

Read 1 Peter 5:5-9

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7)

Raising six children(soon to be seven), darkness is a big issue in our house. Like most children, my children are afraid of the dark. Monsters and robbers hide in the shadows of the darkness. Each night, the bathroom and closet light is left on and the nightlights are plugged in to keep the darkness at bay. Sometimes, in the middle of the night, one of our children will wake up crying from a bad dream and call out for us. As I sit on the bedside holding my trembling child, I whisper that everything is fine, Daddy is right here. Soon, that child is tucked soundly asleep in bed once again, reassured that Daddy has everything under control.

As I stumble back to bed, I can’t help but think that this is such a powerful picture of the way God cares for us. As we struggle to find our way through the shadows of this dark world, Jesus is the light that shines in our darkness. At every crossroads, He whispers, “Do not be afraid for I am with you child. I have everything under control.” In every dark valley of life, He faithfully walks with us and eases our fears. Through every painful circumstance, He calls us to trust Him with our burdens and heartaches. May we celebrate to today the blessing of having a Heavenly father who cares for us!

Trust today that God loves you and has everything under His watchful eye.

Learning to Trust God's Timing

Read Psalm 90:1-12 NIV

For a thousand years in Your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. (Psalm 90:4)

As a child, I loved the Christmas season. I loved decorating the tree, driving to see the lights, singing carols, and watching the Christmas specials on TV. The one thing I didn’t like was waiting for Christmas to come. Weeks seemed to pass like years as my brother and I waited for Christmas morning. My brother and I would wake before the dawn and beg our parents to come to the tree so that we could open our presents. The rest of the day was spent playing with the toys I had been dreaming of the day before.

Now that I am grown and have wide-eyed dreamers of my own, I have learned that waiting is part of life, especially in my walk with God. I have to remind myself often that God does not work on my schedule nor does He count time the way I do. What seems like a long period of waiting for me is merely perfect timing with God. When I grow impatient, I am learning to trust that God is working out all things according to His plan in His time.

Father, teach me to trust that You are working out all things according to Your will in Your timing. As I wait for You to move in my life, grant my heart patience and contentment in every circumstance. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Jogging with God

Read Psalm 90:13-17

Satisfy us in the morning with Your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. (Psalm 90:14)

Several mornings a week, I wake up early and crawl out of bed, put on my running shoes, stretch my tired muscles, and head out for a jog. My main motivation for this exercise is to attempt to stay in shape and to control my growing waistline. Being the father of six children, some mornings I wake up tired and mull over sleeping in that day. (Some days I do!) Yet, most of the time, another motivating factor leads me out my garage door and onto sidewalk.

In the cool of the morning, I know that God is waiting for me to come and talk with Him. Like the rhythm of my feet on the pavement, there is a rhythm to the way that God invades my thoughts and prayers. He speaks to me deep in my heart and renews my spirit to live my life for His glory each day. As I drive to work on these mornings, I have a strong sense that my heart is satisfied in God’s unfailing love.

God, may my heart be satisfied in Your unfailing love this morning. Fill my heart with songs of joy and praise for Your Holy name! In Jesus’ name, amen.

God, Me, and Hurricane Charley…and Francis…and Jeanne

Read 2 Corinthians 4:13-18

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:18)

In 2003, when I lived in Florida, three major hurricanes passed over our small town in just under 6 weeks. Houses were damaged, trees were down, and the power was out for almost two weeks. The worst part of those weeks was the waiting and watching. As each storm approached, our community would rush to the gas pumps and grocery stores to stock up for the days after the storm. Then we would watch the weather forecast and wait(sometimes for days) for the storm to finally come ashore. As we focused on the coming storms, it was easy to lose perspective and begin to imagine the worst and lose heart.

The same is true in our daily lives. If we chose to focus or “fix our eyes” on our present troubles and problems, we will surely feel a sense of despair and “lose heart”. It is during these times that we need to fix our eyes on Jesus and trust Him to carry us through the storms of our life. As we cast our cares on Him, we can be assured that our spirit will be renewed by the love of our eternal Savior.

Jesus, help me today to fix my eyes on You instead of the momentary troubles of my life. When the storms of this life seem to overwhelm me, renew my heart with Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

God's Private Office

Read Romans 1:18-24

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-- His eternal power and divine nature-- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. (Romans 1:20)

A number of years ago, I had the privilege of visiting the Grand Canyon one weekend while speaking at a retreat in Arizona. As we made the drive up from Prescott, I pictured in my mind what the “big hole” would look like. I had seen pictures and heard stories, and I was excited to finally see for myself. My wife and I caught our first glimpse as we rounded a corner while approaching the south rim of the canyon. We were speechless. After parking and walking up to the rim of the canyon, we stood in silence as we took it all in.

Later that day, as the sun set over the canyon and the painted desert stretched out in the distance, my heart was filled with praise for God, the Creator of unspeakable beauty. I couldn’t help thinking that it would be hard to deny the existence of God standing at the edge of such a breathtaking view. I reluctantly drove away that day feeling as if I had just met with God in His private office.

God, remind me each day of Your unfailing love through the simple beauty of Your creation. In each sunrise and sunset, river and stream, songbird and sonnet, let me find You in all of Your glory! In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Passion of Renewal

Read Nehemiah 9:1-5

They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God. (Nehemiah 9:3)

I recently attended a traditional wedding in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. The groomsmen wore tuxedoes and the bridesmaids all wore beautiful gowns. Everything was perfectly in place and the attendees were anxious for the moment when the stunning bride would appear. When the wedding march was finally played, we all stood to our feet to get a glimpse of the bride and her father. After some initial comments from the minister, we all sat back down in comfortable padded chairs.

In contrast, I am always inspired and challenged when I read these verses that tell how the Israelites stood for hours as the word of God was read aloud and how they spent hours in confession and worship. What a renewal of heart and commitment this day must have been! Deep in my soul, I long to have this kind of passion for worship and reading God’s word. I long for my daily time of Bible reading and prayer to transform and turn my heart towards God.

God, give me a passion to spend time each day in worship, scripture reading, and prayer. May my life reflect the transforming power of time spent with You! In Jesus’ name, amen.

Sitting in God’s Lap

Read Ephesians 3:7-13

In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. Ephesians 3:12

Whenever I got in trouble at school growing up, my mother would tell me “Just wait until your father comes home.” When my father eventually came home from work, I would avoid talking to him for as long as possible. The expectation of his disapproval and the punishment I would receive was more than enough motivation to make myself scarce once my father found out what I had done. Often I would wait until my mother talked to him before I dared to myself because she would talk him through his initial reaction of anger.

In the same way, when I place my trust in Christ, He makes it possible for me to approach God in spite of my sin and shame. Because He has shouldered my punishment and has paid the penalty for my sin, I can rest in the power of God’s love and forgiveness. Whereas my earthly mother interceded for me with my earthly father, Jesus intercedes for me with God. Like a child, I can sit in my Heavenly Father’s lap without fear of rejection or punishment because of Jesus.

God, thank You for Your mercy and grace given through Jesus Christ. Through His sacrifice, I have abundant life in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Patience of God

Read 1 Timothy 1:12-17

But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on Him and receive eternal life. 1 Timothy 1:16

I am blessed to be the father of six young children(with a seventh on the way!), four boys and two girls ranging in age from 12 years old to newborn. Each day my life is filled with so much wonder and excitement as my children are discovering their way in this world. Unfortunately, some of this “discovery” includes my children making very poor choices in how they deal with us as parents and how they deal with each other. Especially after a long day, I have a tendency to grow impatient with their arguing and stretching of our house rules.

But once the house is quiet, God has a way of reminding me how much I am like my own children. I think of how I constantly push the limits of what He wants for me, and how I too am in desperate need of mercy. I am humbled by His “unlimited patience” with me, and this humility creates a genuine desire in my heart to have the same kind of patience with those I love the most. God gently reminds me that I am an example of His love towards everyone I spend time with, especially my children.

God, today I am reminded of Your merciful and patient heart towards me. Help me to extend Your love and mercy towards those I love most today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

my new devotional blog

Hi Everyone!!

Welcome to my new devotional blog. If you are a follower of my blog, "Beyond the Comma", thanks for coming over to check out my newest project. If you are new to my writing altogether, thanks for taking the time to see my new blog.

Several years ago, I felt led to start writing short devotional pieces as I read through the Gospels. After I wrote several of these, I felt prompted by God to share these with more people as an encouragement to their faith.

Graciously, God opened the door for me to write for amazing devotional magazines like The Quiet Hour, Devotions, Light from the Word, Take Five Plus, and The Secret Place.

Now that I have written several months of devotions, I wanted to start sharing some of them with you.

Each week, I plan to post short devotional thoughts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. I would love to receive feedback from you about how God spoke to you through the same passage, maybe in a different way.

I strongly believe that daily Bible reading a meditation is so important for the development of our faith, but sometimes, we are too busy to make this a consistent habit and priority in our lives. I know this is a constant struggle for me.

I find short devotional thoughts always get me thinking and I am thankful for writers like Oswald Chambers, Charles Swindoll, and Charles Spurgeon who have inspired my devotional reading over the years.

Here is a sample of one of my devotions...

Never Alone
Read Haggai 1:7-15

During the Civil War, no general had a greater impact on his soldiers than the confederate general Robert E. Lee. It is said that the mere sight of him riding the front lines caused the confederate soldiers to give the “rebel yell” and surge forward into the fight. Lee reminded his men that he was with them with his constant presence on the battlefield. Because of Lee’s leadership, the Confederate army won a number of significant battles throughout the war even though they were usually badly out-numbered.

In our darkest days, our greatest challenges, our loneliest moments, or our greatest disappointments, it is encouraging to know that God is with us every step of the way.

Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, gave this message of the LORD to the people: "I am with you," declares the LORD (Haggai 1:13).

Just as the Confederate soldiers were encouraged by the sight of General Lee riding upon his famous horse Traveler, we can find comfort in a God who knows everything and has everything under His control.

When do you feel most alone and in need of God’s presence in your life?

What can you do to remind yourself that God is with you everyday?

God, help us desire to draw closer to You each day.

See you next week!!
